The Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program, passed by the Legislature, follows all applicable laws and has been highly successful in removing the chains of government from Texas families and students, empowering parents to direct their kid’s education.
The Comptroller releases information on the TEFA program so Texans can see how their tax dollars are being spent and to empower every Texan to help preserve the integrity of the program. At the same time, the Comptroller has a responsibility to protect the privacy of student records and family financial information.
TEFA is a new program, and the data released to date is a snapshot taken while accounts are still being awarded and funded in the program’s first year. When the data in a category — such as school district, campus, grade level, or household income — includes fewer than 10 participating students, the Comptroller’s office does not report the exact number. Instead, the data is marked as “fewer than 10,” rounded, or combined with other categories. Masking small numbers prevents individuals from being identified through the comparison of public datasets without compromising the accuracy of data for the broader program.
