Tradition of Service

Matiya – future Texas game warden

I am applying for this scholarship because right now, this account only exists because my grandmother and my aunt know how important it is to me to go to college. Because they are trying to help, receiving this scholarship will mean additional college classes.

My career goal is to become the youngest Texas Game Warden. It would be a great honor to be one of the very few female Wardens in the State of Texas and carry on the tradition of service that began with Oyster patrol in Galveston, TX in 1895. What I love about Game Wardens are that they protect salt and fresh water, desert, mountains, valleys, and the piney woods–and all can be found right here in the great State of Texas!

In researching my dream career, I have decided the best place to study would be Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, TX because they have the best program in Wildlife Management in the State of Texas. To graduate early and be ready to be the youngest Game Warden, and to extend my college savings account, I will be completing dual credit classes while I am in high school.

I have chosen to be a Game Warden because I like animals and learning about them. Some of my favorite television shows are Wild Kratz, Chasing Monsters, Sharks, and Wild Savannah where I learn about habits and habitats of various animals. I also have a monthly subscription to Ducks Unlimited magazine. I have a Spotted Leopard Gecko as a pet.

Also, I am athletic and I know that is important, since I will have to complete a physical challenge to be a Game Warden. I understand the requirements of my chosen career to be proficiency in the areas of swimming to save myself or another; proficiency in the area of marksmanship; good vision, with or without corrective lenses; physical acuity; and drug-free. The agility test includes lifting, running, swimming, and climbing. I learned to swim when I was 3 and enjoy swimming, boating, water sports, and fishing. Currently, I am a greenbelt senior in the sport of Tae Kwon Do.

I am also pretty good with a bow and arrow, am patient, and enjoy watching wildlife in their natural environment.

Thank you for your time and for considering my application for the scholarship.
