The Texas Comptroller's office awards contracts to Texas public universities to conduct scientific research on species that are petitioned or listed under the federal Endangered Species Act. The purpose of this research is to contribute scientific information to inform the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and National Marine Fisheries Service's species status assessments and listing decisions.
CPA issues calls for proposals (CFPs) or enters into direct inter-agency contracts with eligible universities in accordance with Chapter 771 of the Texas Government Code. The division coordinates with and gathers input from species-specific working groups, agency partners including the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, FWS, and other entities with scientific and technical expertise to identify and prioritize species research needs.
