All About Dentistry career essay

Olivia | future dentist

I am interested in dentistry because dentists take care of problems with the mouth to prevent oral cavity diseases and improve people's facial looks. This gives confidence to those who may feel embarrassed because of their teeth or smile. I like to go to the dentist to see all the technology they use to keep teeth healthy.

The most common childhood oral problem is cavities. According to the American Dental Association, in 2007, 100 million people in the U.S. did not go to the dentist. Many people only go to the dentist if they have dental pain or other issues. Regular dental exams are good to maintain oral health.

All U.S. dental schools require students to take the Dental Admission Test (DAT). At the end of a dental program, two degrees- Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) may be earned. Dental students can get these degrees with a four-year curriculum; first two years are mostly about natural and clinical science instruction in classrooms and laboratories. The last two years are based on hands-on experiences in dental clinics, treating real patients under the supervision of skilled dentists.

Dentists usually work 35 to 40 hours a week. According to the Bureau Labor Statistics in 2008, the average dentist earned a salary of $156,930. Most dentists are self-employed and can work as many hours as they like. As a dentist I could work for myself at a hospital or clinic, or as a professor -teaching about dentistry in a university or college.

I used the internet to research on how much money dentists earn, and the type of education required to start this career.

In conclusion, I would like to pursue a career in dentistry and help others with their oral needs.
