Marina, the Medical Examiner

Marina – future medical examiner

My name is Marina. I've wanted to be a pediatric doctor or nurse for a very long time. Although I'm still interested in the medical field, I have discovered an interest in forensics lately.

This past summer, I was selected to participate in a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math summer camp. We used computers to create robotics that a medical examiner might use to investigate crime scenes. I really enjoyed the week-long camp and I want to go again next summer since our camp counselors promised us a field trip to a medical examiner's office next time we attend.

I did a little bit of research about what it takes to be a medical examiner. A medical examiner investigates deaths and injuries that happen under suspicious circumstances to determine a person's cause of death. It would require that I have a heart that wants to help people, a mind that is sharp, knowledge of the medical field, and knowledge about the law.

I like helping people. Last year, I volunteered through the National Junior Honor Society and Boy Scouts. My favorite volunteer opportunities last year were when I volunteered for the Acting Club and the Ballet Folklorico Dance Club at my local elementary school; volunteering in these projects was a lot of work and a lot of fun!

I have a sharp mind; I earned the Principal's Honor Roll award every quarter since I started receiving letter grades. It makes me feel special to earn this recognition every quarter!

I would be thrilled to keep learning about medicine and the law and how these two fields are related to each other in forensics. I know this career path is not easy, but I am not afraid to work hard to be a "Marina, the medical examiner"!
