Why I Like to Sing

Jaclyn – future praise and worship leader

I've been debating in my head for a very long time. What do I want to do with my life, what do I want to be when I grow up? After all this deep thought, I realized the answer was right in front of me this whole time. I really want to be a praise and worship leader. This is something I hold very close to my heart, because of all the memories I have of church when I was little.

I used to be in the tiny kindergarten room in front of a stage that looked so big at the time, watching all the people sing. I remember thinking that I wanted to be just like them when I got older. As life went on, I got more and more excited about the thought that one day, I would be the one on that stage. Finally my dream came true, and I was invited to join the praise and worship team for the elementary kids. After seeing me sing in the big church Christmas production, they thought I had a great voice so they invited me in. My dream came true I am an official volunteer! Now that I am a part of the team, I see that it's about more than just singing, it's about making people feel welcome or included. It's about sharing the word of God through your voice. When I was younger, I didn't get why my Mom would sometimes cry during worship but now I understand. The music really moves people and makes them feel something special. I also admire all the lengths the main worship team and theatre arts group go through to make people experience that. Every year they put together a huge Christmas production with costumes, props, actors, singers and dancers. They also have to pick all the songs and write or rewrite new ones. They also have to find singers to record the songs, or record them all by themselves. They go through all of this, so people can be touched by God and find the real message behind all the sermons and songs.

If I were to get this scholarship, I would use it to get into a good school where I would major in music and education. I would then like to apply for a position on a real worship team at my church. I would also like to be a music teacher.

My family always says that you can be successful if you work hard and do something you love. I truly love this job, and I know it's what I would like to fulfill in my future. Until then I will keep working towards this goal in hopes that one day, I'll be the one singing in the huge auditorium.
