Working With My Hands

Cara – future micro welder

This past semester I went to [a] junior college with my AVID class (Advancement Via Individual Determination . ) We toured different departments and facilities. In the welding department, the presenter talked about how women were in high demand in the welding field because women tend to have a higher focus for precision and attention to detail. The presenter spoke about the different types of welding jobs and their average salaries. I was very intrigued that I could go to a technical school for two years to get my associates degree in welding (a level II certificate) and make around $40,000 per year. According to www.bls.gov, welding jobs are predicted to grow 5% and the median pay is $18.94 per hour.

I did some more research online to look at the types of welding jobs available. The area I'm most interested in is micro welding. It is precise welds using micro-resistance and micro-TIG welding. This is used in making and repairing electronic, dental, and medical equipment. I think I would like this career because I like working with my hands, and I am very precise. Also, I am very focused when working on small detailed crafts.

The main reasons I am interested in micro welding are that I am able to get the training I need at a technical school in two years, the salary is good, and I can work on precise details. If I am chosen to receive one of the matching scholarships, I will use it to go to school to become a micro welder.
